How to Find Unclaimed State Money

Money that belongs to you is apparently stashed away in treasuries belonging to the 50 states and the federal government. Have you ever thought of the fact that you could have unclaimed state money waiting for you in the treasuries of one or more states? Would you like your state to use up your hard-earned money for its own benefit? Why take a loan or apply for government grants when you have unclaimed state money that could enable you to buy that new house or car?

You Money May Disappear
Since every state has its own written constitution and makes its own laws, various bills have been passed empowering the states to use unclaimed state money such as Trust funds or gift certificates and other unclaimed money.

Unclaimed Money in California
California State was among the first few states that came under fire for hoarding unclaimed state money from public property and not making substantial efforts to hand over the money to the rightful owners. In June 2007, the State was even restricted from accepting unclaimed state money that came from abandoned safe deposit lockers, stocks and other public property lying unclaimed with various companies.

Finding Your Money
Each state has one or more unclaimed state money databases that are made available to the public. You will have to look up if your name is listed in any of the 50 state databases. There is a high possibility that you have unclaimed state money lying in a state that you or your relatives may have lived in the past. While searching for unclaimed state money, always search using different formats of your name such as M. Miller, Margaret Miller, Maggie Miller, M. G. Miller, et cetera. There are websites dedicated to helping people on humanitarian grounds to find unclaimed state money in all 50 state databases. Some charge a small fee for the same.

Claiming Your Money
Once you find any money under your name, you can fill in an online claim form available on most websites. You will be asked for photo identification, social security card, your phone number and other documents to validate your claim. It’s high time you prevent your unclaimed state money from being used by the State or being reflected as profit in the balance sheet of some company.
