How happy people may be getting the better deal
Research suggests that being happy may boost your chances for professional and financial success.
When something goes well in your life, it’s not uncommon to expect that that success would make you happy.
It is now believed that the reason things go well in the first place may be, in part, because someone is happy to begin with.
Simply put, evidence suggests happiness begets success. When successful your happiness increases, which then can produce more success. This is a nice effect.
Research done at the University of Illinois, the University of California, and the University of Missouri-Columbia found that those with a cheerful disposition are more likely to, among other things:
* Get a job interview
* Be employed
* Perform well at work
* Receive higher evaluations from bosses
* Make more money
* Have jobs with more meaning and variety and less supervision
* Avoid job burnout
The researchers define a “happy” person as someone who frequently experiences joy, interest, and pride, while only infrequently experiencing negative emotions like anger, anxiety and sadness.
What if you are not one of these happy people? Is job security or happiness out of reach?
Not necessarily. It is also reported that there are plenty of less happy people who enjoy professional success. They may even have the edge when it comes to jobs requiring critical thinking, error checking or watching for potential problems.
While happiness was the main focus for the research; intelligence, conscientiousness, athletic ability, beauty and connections are among the factors that also contribute to success.
The research states that about 50 percent of a happy disposition may be attributed to genes.
Alas, if at this point you feel there is no hope, cheer up, short-term studies lasting between six and 10 weeks, found participants were able to boost their levels of happiness by doing one or more of the following:
* Making an account every day of things in their life for which they're grateful
* Practicing acts of kindness
* Viewing things more optimistically
* Being forgiving
To increase happiness it was also recommended that you have an important goal that you enjoy pursuing or taking up something you find relaxing.
