When a person searches for lost money, what exactly are they searching for? This is the question most people want to know when confronted with the lost money problem. Many people have heard of lost money. They may not know where it comes from, but they’ve probably heard success stories of people finding a hundred here or a thousand there. Current and former Arizona residents seem to be in the dark about the state’s unclaimed money problem. With over $400 million in lost funds and with more flowing in all the time, one would assume that current and former residents would be lining up to collect some of that money that could be rightfully theirs. Yet very few people ever step up to claim Arizona lost funds, which is why the state is in its current predicament. If residents don’t start stepping up soon, the amount could reach half a billion dollars in just a year or two.

Every year around 200,000 current and former residents contribute to the state of Ohio’s missing money account. Josh Mandel, the State Treasurer of Ohio, is urging residents to track down missing money in Ohio. With over a billion dollars to content with, Mandel is up to his ears in dollar bills that don’t even belong to him. He wants all of the missing money in Ohio to go back to the rightful owners. Until those residents come forward, he may never get his wish.

The state of Pennsylvania is sitting on $1.5 billion in unclaimed property. That’s a lot of scratch and it’s too much for state Treasury officials to manage. It’s the Treasury department’s job to return all of that money to the rightful owners. With all of that money to account for, calling and sending letters to all of the rightful owners of that money is going to be a pretty tough job. It’s a little known fact that unclaimed money and lost cash have reached unprecedented amounts across the country. If you live in Texas or you used to live there, you may have a Texas tax refund coming to you from the State Controller’s office. Every year the state sees an influx of tax refunds in Texas and the Controller’s office is at odds about what to do. Officials are baffled that more Texans aren’t coming forward. With many living paycheck to paycheck and many more than in debt, officials expected more people to step forward to claim that the money belongs to them. Until those people come forward, the billions in unclaimed funds will continue to gather dust in bank vaults across the state.

The United States recently avoided going over a fiscal cliff, but the country is facing another fiscal crisis not often talked about.
