Usually when you hear about doing a search for unclaimed property you think of a person doing this. It is not a very well known fact that school districts, cities and counties also could have unclaimed money.

His review of what’s published as The Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt in newspapers across the state each fall keeps Rogers off a list of 119 cities, school districts, counties and other government entities with $89, 523 in unclaimed money held by the State Auditor Jim Wood’s office.
A search of the auditor’s database at www. auditorjimwood. org revealed which governments have unclaimed funds.
It is known that the state is holding $11,000 for a school district, $4,000 for a county tax collector and $2,700 for a city.
Most of the government entities in the auditor’s database were found with searches for key words. For instance, a search for the phrase “city of� revealed 24 listings. Many other cities, counties and school districts were found by searching for their names. That wouldn’t have worked in a search for Thornton, however, because the south-central Arkansas city’s name is misspelled as “Thorton� in the state auditor’s database.
Similarly, it would be difficult to find many of the Arkansas Department of Insurance’s 19 listings. That’s because most of them read “State INS Dept.�
Abbreviations are among the reasons a search “skimmed the surface� of government entities with money awaiting them.
Searching for school district money is more difficult because it is sometimes listed in the district’s name and sometimes it’s shown under the name of a specific school.
