It has been reported that State Treasurer Kay Ivey is looking for Covington County residents. Her reason for the search is to return approximately $545,000 to rightful owners. If you don’t live in Covington County, there still may be money for you in the State’s coffers.
Each year the state treasury brings in millions of dollars in unclaimed property. Unclaimed property can be in the form of un-cashed checks, stocks, bonds, dividend checks, utility deposits, and items found in abandoned safe deposit boxes. After a business has held unclaimed property for a number of years set by law, they turn it over to the state treasury, and it is held until individuals come forward to claim it.
Ivey encourages all Alabamians to search for their names on the state database by visiting her website at www.treasury.alabama.gov. Claims may be filed online or by calling the Treasurer’s Office and requesting a claim form. The Unclaimed Property division of the Treasurer’s Office can be reached toll free at 1-888-844-8400.
