Unclaimed Funds Owed By San Diego Tops $6.4 Million

Two months ago, the county of San Diego offered more than $1 million in refunds to hotel and motel guests who were overtaxed for their rooms. The actual amount of overcharging is over $4 million dollars, but the time limits are up on claiming some of those funds and the county is now spending much of the money.

Now, the county is attempting to return nearly $2.4 million dollars in unclaimed funds that resulted from people overpaying their property taxes.

The county’s treasurer-tax collector, said he discovered the pot of unclaimed taxes in a trust while reviewing the refund process for the erroneously collected room taxes. People overpaid for various reasons, such as accidentally mixing up numbers or not knowing that their taxes were covered by escrow.

Property owners who overpaid their taxes had been notified previously, but there was “little follow-up.”

The county has made little progress in refunding the people who were overtaxed for their hotel and motel rooms. No refunds have been issued so far.

There are stories like this one all over the United States where billions of dollars in unclaimed property, money and funds are being held by a local, state or federal agency and are not being returned to the rightful owners. Often the government agency holding these lost funds end up never returning the money and spending it themselves. Make sure this doesn’t happen to your money. Check every year to see if you are owed unclaimed or found money.
