The California state treasury is facing a massive problem: It’s holding onto six billion dollars in excess money with no rightful owners in sight. That may seem like a great problem to have, but the ‘finders keepers, losers weepers’ clause unfortunately doesn’t apply to US monetary funds. The owners of those funds must be located or else the money will just sit there. And since six billion dollars lying dormant for years could be detrimental to the economy, it’s clear something must be done. The good news is that a solution has been proposed and put into place. The name of this solution is Cash Unclaimed and it just might help California out of its unclaimed property conundrum.
