What do you think of when you hear people speaking about the term unclaimed property? Some people might think of actual physical property, such as a plot of land or a farm. If you are one of the individuals who think this then you are actually correct. Unclaimed property can certainly be a plot of land or even a whole farm. It can also be a house that is built on that land or include all the barns and stables that a farm would have. It could even be a mansion along with all of the original furniture inside.

Every single year millions if not billions of dollars go missing from the accounts and pockets of Americans all over the nation. This money comes from lost paychecks, unreturned security, utility and rental deposits. It even comes from bank accounts and safe deposit boxes and storage units that have been abandoned or left behind as well as many other sources. All of this missing money accumulates and puts undue burden on state and federal officials year after year. It’s known as a nationwide missing money problem and something needs to be done about it before it gets way out of hand.

You would think with California’s economy in such dire straits that state officials would use all the money at the state’s disposal to try and rectify the situation. Yet the state still has millions of dollars in unclaimed funds sitting in its treasury coffers. Unclaimed funds in California are growing out of control, this according to local news affiliates that have picked up the story here and there throughout the years. The state could use the money, but yet it just sits there collecting dust, not doing anyone, the State or the individuals it belongs to, any bit of good. What can we do about this situation but watch it grow further out of control?

Many parents are forced to pay child support and it would be nice if that money actually went directly to the child. Unfortunately, this is not usually how this ends up working out. When a court passes judgment on a defendant in a child support case, that money has to be paid to the court first and then it goes to the care giving parent. Sometimes that money never quite reaches the parent and it ends up becoming unclaimed funds that the state just holds onto. California is facing yet another crisis which is hitting its already struggling economy. The problem directly has to do with California unclaimed assets, which will continue to act as a burden on the State until more people come forward. State Treasury officials across the country are baffled by a growing unclaimed property problem. In all 50 States, it appears that unclaimed property is flowing in at alarming rates and there doesn’t appear to be any slow down anytime soon. While officials have some ideas how to stop the problem, most of those ideas cost even more money that the States in question just do not have. In the end, it is going to be up to the citizens who are owed unclaimed property to come forward and claim the property before the problem as we know it gets any worse.
