According to Bloomberg Business Week News, Hawaii Attorney General has recently begun investigating an unclaimed property email scam sent to many Hawaii residents.
This email scam message claims that the recipient is an heir to unclaimed property. The attorney general urges not to give any personal or financial information out, and to not respond to these emails as the state treasurer is not sending out these emails.

Unclaimed money is a major concern for New York officials. The New York Comptroller is trying hard to locate the real owners of the unclaimed property scattered in its provinces. According to Massachusetts State Treasurer, Steven Grossman, the state treasury was able to return $84 million in unclaimed property during the 2012 fiscal year. This was a 10% increase from the 2011 fiscal year for unclaimed property returns.
Grossman is doing everything he can to make sure all the money goes back to its owners. There is no time limit to claim the money or property the state is holding on to, and in most cases, claimants will receive interest.

One ex-Oklahoma Treasurer worker has recently been sentenced to 12 years in prison for participating in a scheme to steal unclaimed money from the state’s unclaimed money vault.
Also, ex-internal auditor, LaTisha Reid, was sentenced for 16 years of probation and ordered to pay $19,101 in restitution. LaTisha Reid was accused of allegedly creating fraudulent court documents and death certificates using state computers in order to steal money from Oklahoma’s unclaimed property funds.

Maryland’s Comptroller has had booths at various county fairs throughout the past few years promoting unclaimed property. At these booths, one can see if they have any unclaimed money in their name, on the spot, and take the necessary procedures to claim it back.
One man found $71,516 last year at one of Maryland’s State Fairs. In 2011, the state’s Comptroller was able to return over $400,000 in only 8 fairs!
The state unclaimed property booth will be at the Maryland State Fair August 24 to Monday, September 2, from 10am to 10pm in the Exhibition Hall.

Illinois is offering tours of the state treasurer’s vault, which holds the state’s unclaimed property. This is the second year in a row State Treasurer Dan Rutherfold will be offering public tours of the vault, where the state keeps the unclaimed property. The tours will Last year, over 1,000 people toured the unclaimed property vault. That year, they were able to return $101 million in unclaimed funds and property.
Most of the Illinois unclaimed property comes from abandoned or unclaimed safety deposit contents. The property is held for 5 years. After 5 years, the property is auctioned off and the money is held indefinitely until the owner comes forward to claim the property (or money).

According to theindependent.com, Nebraska will be hosting many unclaimed property events with the hopes to return the unclaimed funds to its rightful owners. They will be having unclaimed property specialists at the Nebraska State Fair from 7/24 to 9/3, and also at Harvest Days on 9/11-9/13. At these events, the unclaimed property specialists will be creating awareness of unclaimed property and educating the public about it. Cash Dash is a program that was set up by the Illinois government to inform the public on unclaimed money. Cash Dash has proven to be successful in returning unclaimed money back to its owners.
Chicago unclaimed money is at its peak with more than $1.5 billion currently with the state treasury that has no seekers until now. The State Treasurer, Dan Rutherford, recently organized a Cash Dash event in the western region of Chicago to encourage people in claiming back their lost money that has been lying with the state for more than five years.

Announced today on KMVT, Idaho has removed the unclaimed property time limitations, which make claiming unclaimed property endless. This law to un-restrict the time frame owners had to search for their unclaimed property came into effect July 1st, 2012.
