Maryland is dealing with the increasing pile of unclaimed money, which is hampering the working of the state agencies who are managing these lost funds. The state agencies are introducing initiatives to spread awareness about importance of Maryland unclaimed money to public.
As per the current estimates by the State Treasury, Maryland lost money in total comes to be around $970 million dollars with a total available record of 860,000. According to the Wall Street Journal, Angelina Jolie is owed $659.01 in unclaimed money from the state of California. That just shows that anyone can be owned unclaimed money.

State Treasurer Dan Rutherford has made it a priority to decrease the amount of unclaimed money and property since he assumed the position in January of 2011. His efforts have proved to be successful as 2011 experiences an increase of 23% more returned unclaimed money than 2010.

A recent news article announced that the state of New York currently has $11 million in unclaimed funds sitting with the government.

One school district in Ohio was recently reunited with $51,000 in unclaimed funds. This unclaimed money was held by the Ohio state treasury, until it was finally paired up with belonging to the school district.
