Iowa’s Treasure Hunt Still Proves Unsuccessful

The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program has returned over $122 million in unclaimed property to more than 310,000 individuals since Fitzgerald began the program. “We get millions of dollars in each year,” Fitzgerald stated. “We believe the best way to find people are to ask others in their community to help us. That’s why we are sending out the top 25 list.”

In fall, State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald created a top 25 list of unclaimed money owners in the state of Iowa. “You won’t find any football teams on the list, but what you will find are names of people in Lee County that have money waiting for them to claim.” Fitzgerald said. “If you don’t recognize any of the names, check our website for others.”

It is confirmed that the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt will be returning money long past December and even into the 2011. But, unfortunately the expectations of the treasure hunt program have not been met. State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald had a much higher figure in mind.

“It’s the time of year to give, and I want to give back Iowans their unclaimed property,” Fitzgerald said. “Every year, millions of dollars in unclaimed property are turned over to the State Treasurer’s Office through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program. Our goal is to return as much of the property to the rightful owners as possible.”

“Our office makes giving back a year-round priority,” Fitzgerald said. “When the holiday season is behind us, we’ll still be here doing what we can to reunite people with their unclaimed property.”
