Maryland’s Looking to Save Taxpayers, Not Promote Unclaimed Money

Maryland is debating saving tax payers $500,000 in advertising expenses by cutting out publishing the owners of unclaimed money or property in supplements found in the newspapers.

The state Comptroller, Peter Franchot, instead proposed placing a small ad n the newspapers directing people to go to the website to search for unclaimed money.

In 2011, Maryland had 75,000 unclaimed money owners, and only 6% of those owners came forward to claim their money. With this figure being so low, the state Comptroller has a valid reason for getting rid of the high advertising expense and save the tax payers money.
