Good Morning America Has Story on School With Unclaimed Money!

In a recent Good Morning America, they featured a story about unclaimed money. This story was slightly different than other unclaimed money stories most have been hearing about; one local school from a small town in New York was owed OVER $6,000! The money was not to an individual, but a school!

This was a tear-jerker, as the school recently suffered horrible flooding damaged due to recent Hurricane Irene. The school is still under repair, and the unclaimed money could not have come at a better time!

Massachusetts Auctions off Over $400,000 in Unclaimed Property

In today’s news, the state of Massachusetts has auctioned off enough unclaimed property to collect over $400,000 in funds collected from the property sold. The month-long auction raised 52% more funds than the appraised value of the unclaimed items.

This is not the first time Massachusetts has actioned off unclaimed property; it is the 7th time the state has used eBay to help sold part of the unclaimed property problem. However, this current auction proved to be a success as only 40 items were not sold.

If anyone can prove any of these sold unclaimed items are theirs, the state will give the owner the full sale price for the items.

New York has Over 7000 People Owed Unclaimed IRS Money

Just reported today, there are over 100 people in Northern New York alone who are owed unclaimed IRS money. The average refund amount for these 100 people is $812. Statewide, New York has over 7,002 people who are owed unclaimed IRS refunds.

The IRS has made a list for New York residents available online to view. Its that easy to search for your unclaimed tax refund money!

Louisiana Holds Millions in Insurance Rebates

Just announced today by Louisiana Insurance Commissioner, Jim Donelon, the state of Louisiana holds over $270 MILLION in unclaimed Louisiana insurance rebates. Just last week, Donelon issued notices to the owners of these rebates, in hopes they will turn up to claim their unclaimed money.

Legislators have passed a law that gives the owners a 4 year window to claim back their money. If it is not claimed in 4 years, that money will be turned over to the state, and used for a number of state initiatives.

Despite Connecticut’s Size, it Holds Large Amounts of Unclaimed Money

The state treasuries in Connecticut are their trying best with their implemented initiatives to slow down the alarming growth of state unclaimed money but the progress is still the topic of discussion. The initiatives led by the state include dedicated websites for citizens, annual public releases and public fairs to educate people about the Connecticut unclaimed money.

The Connecticut unclaimed money is kept under the safe custody of the state controller until the rightful owner is found. With application procedure made easier and a centralized website for information, Connecticut hopes for the problem of state unclaimed money and unclaimed property, to slow down a bit in coming times.
